History/Background: here
Personality:
First and foremost, Yoichi is a coward. When he’s first introduced, all there seems to be to him is someone who’s scared of dying and doesn’t like to fight. He’d rather let himself be bossed around and bullied than solve a problem with aggression even if it means he gets hurt. His homeroom teacher and superior officer, Guren Ichinose, calls him “the crybaby” when introducing him, and for good reason: he bursts into tears nearly at the drop of a hat, be it when he’s in danger from a vampire attack or because he’s relieved that he and his friends have made it through danger unscathed. Yoichi rarely stands up for himself, preferring to let others walk all over him, and he apologizes far too often for things that aren’t his fault. When he first meets the manga’s main character, Yuuichirou Hyakuya, Yoichi is being intimidated into buying lunch for the school bullies. When Yuu stands up for him, Yoichi says that it’s not bullying and that it’s his fault, even going so far as to let the bullies hit and kick him without protest, all because at one point, he’d asked the bullies for their help and was willing to take the poor treatment as repayment to them.

A coward and a crybaby – that’s the most noticeable thing about Yoichi, but that’s by far not all there is to him. Beneath his timid exterior, Yoichi has a core of determination and strength of will, albeit a deeply buried one. The reason he’d asked the bullies for help in the first place? He wanted a second chance at taking the entrance exam for the Japanese Imperial Demon Army (JIDA), motivated by a desire to join up and fight against the vampires who had killed his sister right in front of him. Despite his fear, when it comes to protecting those he cares about, Yoichi finds steel within himself that allows him to overcome his cowardice for the sake of others. Even before he receives a weapon and training from JIDA, Yoichi is willing to tackle a vampire to keep her from killing Yuu (at the time his only friend) despite, as a mere, unarmed human, being hopelessly outmatched. Yoichi’s strength stems from his kind-heartedness, a quality that makes him seem soft and unsuited for the harsh reality of battle, but also provides him with the motivation to fight and work past his fear. Yoichi is unfailingly loyal, and his main motivation for fighting is not for revenge (what he initially believes it to be), but to be able to protect those he cares for. For the sake of his squadron – his family – Yoichi is willing to face down literal monsters, the stuff of his nightmares.

Overall, Yoichi is a friendly and agreeable person. He forgives easily and doesn’t hold grudges, and though meek and unhappy when faced with interpersonal conflict, he plays the mediator of the group, trying to smooth ruffled feathers and help the members of his squadron get along. He’s willing to step between the strong personalities of Yuu and another of his classmates (and later squadmates), Shihou Kimizuki, who constantly bicker to the point of coming to blows. Yoichi manages to remain uncowed in the face of their constant squabbling, patiently interjecting himself in an effort to convince them to get along even when the rest of their class, upon witnessing the fighting, quails and bemoans having to put up with “two thugs.” Yoichi constantly puts others before himself; he is kind and generous and tries to believe the best of others. When the bullies who had earlier tormented him later came to him for aid in saving a friend who had been trapped by a demon, Yoichi was quick to agree to help them despite what they’d put him through before.

Yoichi’s kindness and desire to avoid conflicts is both one of his greatest weaknesses as well as one of his greatest strengths. When contracting with his demon weapon, Gekkouin, Yoichi nearly falls to the demon’s possession because he lacked a strong enough desire to fight for revenge. Demons in the series feed off of greed, anger, and ego, and Yoichi was lacking in all three; only through his superior officer’s intervention in eliciting Yoichi’s desire to fight to protect was he saved from being consumed by Gekkouin. However, Yoichi is also unusually friendly with his demon. Rather than hold his near-possession against Gekkouin, Yoichi made friends with the demon, conversing with Gekkouin while he slept and advancing his ability to draw upon the demon’s strength unnaturally fast – and Yoichi sees nothing strange about befriending the demon that wants to consume him. He considers it unremarkable that he and Gekkouin have conversations about topics as mundane as their favorite colors while the other newly contracted members of his squad can’t get their demons to even respond to their questions, let alone share such insignificant minutiae about themselves.

With those he feels comfortable around, Yoichi opens up further, at times openly worrying about their health and chiding them for not taking care of themselves. He’s willing to tease his friends, albeit gently. When Shinoa and Mitsuba (two other members of his squadron) play a prank on Kimizuki and Yuu by driving off without them, pretending they’re going to leave the two troublemakers behind, Yoichi breaks out of his shy shell enough to join in the joking (it’s even implied, though not confirmed, that he was the one who came up with the idea for the prank in the first place). Yoichi will make dry remarks or gentle jibes about how troublesome his teammates can be or how reckless they are, all good-natured, but still definitely teasing. As he slowly gains confidence in himself and his abilities, he becomes more comfortable with standing up for himself and with poking fun at his friends. He still will cling to a friend with tears in his eyes when he’s scared or overcome with relief, but he also develops backbone: when one of the army’s snipers, Shinya Hiiragi, takes Yoichi under his wing to teach him the basics of sniping, Yoichi is initially anxious and fretful, but quickly learns from Shinya to be determined and calm, nervous but competent and unwavering in his desire to learn and become stronger for the sake of his comrades who are depending on him to support them in battle.

As the series progresses, Yoichi’s confidence grows, and he becomes more sure of himself and willing to show a bit more stubbornness. Though he still is scared and dislikes battle, he also shows a certain eagerness for testing his skills and seeing how he’s improved. In later chapters, when his squadron is outside the safe zone of the city, rather than cower and shrink from fighting monsters, Yoichi eagerly scouts their position and even asks to be allowed to kill the enemies himself, without anyone else’s help. Rather than the totally meek and nervous Yoichi at the beginning of the series, Yoichi becomes someone who smiles (unsettlingly) as he shoots monsters, pleased at both his own ability and at being able to protect his friends. When facing Mikaela Hyakuya, a vampire who is also Yuu’s missing childhood friend and adopted family, Yoichi is even sure enough of himself to call Mika familiarily in the middle of battle, standing up to Mika and deciding to protect Mika from the other members of JIDA rather than being intimidated by him. Yoichi’s confidence doesn’t translate to arrogance, though. Yoichi still considers himself considerably weaker than the other members of his squad, and when his skill is complimented, he responds modestly, downplaying what he’s just done as no big deal. Yoichi is still shy and meek, but he’s also learned to stand firm in his opinions, and will now openly disagree with his friends and members of his squad if he thinks it’s necessary, or even disobey orders and fight against other members of JIDA to protect the people he cares about.

Carrier: Maggie 2.0
A mechanical magpie. They've made some modifications to make it 10% less edible and 100% more likely to perch on someone's head. It likes collecting shiny things and singing songs by the popular 12-member idol group, Moon's.

Magic Weapon: Moonlight Rhyme (image)
A large, scoped recurve bow made of dull black metal, embedded with obsidian gemstones to serve as mana mediums. It has studs where gear attachments holding other gemstones can be added for greater mana conductivity.

While the bow can use ordinary arrows, with its ability Shadow Sap, it can also fire magic arrows that pierce a target’s shadow to manipulate mana flow and cause temporary paralysis and a gradual sapping effect, weakening the enemy over time. Strength and duration of the effect depends on the user’s synchronization, and at highest levels, may even transfer small amounts of sapped mana to the bow’s holder. At high skill levels, multiple Shadow Sap arrows can be fired at once, but this takes exponentially larger amounts of mana and will quickly drain the user.
